ROSE: Windy Cello Recording in Chinatown

I spent the month of February writing the score for a short film called Rose. It’s a story about a man reliving the past, stuck in a regretful loop in his mind.

When I start on a score, whether it’s 2 minutes long or 2 hours, I spend countless time fiddling with notes, shifting them around to fit in some way. With this one, I knew the story I wanted to tell with the music… how it feels to be stuck. In life, in work, in your head.

I also knew I wanted it performed on a cello. All of us span highs and low across a single day, and the cello’s range felt like it represented that. It can go remarkably low, but it’s also extremely fragile and delicate when played high in the register. Almost like the strings are about to snap.

Thank you to Marza Wilkes a wonderful cellist and human being, for the performance on the windiest day Chinatown has ever seen. Her performance of this piece was incredible and she brought such passion to every note.
